ALL ABOUT CITIZENSHIP AMENDMENT ACT

The Citizenship Amendment Bill was put forth by the Modi-led BJP government and was enacted into law on 12 Dec 2019.As soon as the Bill was proposed in the parliament massive protest happened in various parts of the country.So what did the law says that has led to a massive protest in the country.

Q) What is CAA?

Citizenship Amendment act is an act to give Indian citizenship to people. It says that people who have entered India illegally from Pakistan,Bangladesh,Afghanistan on or before 31 December 2014 and have stayed in India for five years are eligible to apply for Indian Citizenship if they are from one of these religions:

1)Hindu

2)Sikh 3)Christian 4)Jain 5)Parsi 6)Buddhist So why is this bill extended to only six religions and include only three countries? The Central Government claims that people of these six faiths have faced persecution in these three countries and so India has proposed a bill to give them shelter.

Q)WHY PEOPLE ARE PROTESTING AGAINST THIS ACT?

The reasons of the protest vary with the geography.Some alleged that it violates the secular identity of the nation by Excluding one religion.Others fear that providing citizenship to these illegal immigrants will endanger their cultural identity .Some alleged that CAA when combined with NRC will become a tool to throw Muslim population out of the country.

Q)WHY IS ASSAM PROTESTING AGAINST CAA?

The people of Assam fears that it will benefit illegal Bengali Hindu from Bangladesh who have settled in large number in Assam.Assam people fear that Bengali hindu immigrants will outnumber Assamese speaking people in the region and they will lose their culture and identity .They don't want immigrants of any religion whether hindu or Muslim.Their objective is to save their identity and Culture .Hence they are protesting against it.\

Q)THE SECULAR THOUGHT PEOPLE

The other group of people are protesting against it because they feel that it is against the secular image of the country.If persecuted minorities are to be provided citizenship then there are other persecuted minorities too and they should be provided with Citizenships.
